What is Compression?
Compaction is a process consisting of the application of loads through the passage of compactor rollers or vibrating plates immediately after the application of the asphalt mass. This step helps reduce voids and increases the density of the asphalt, making it firmer and more resistant to wear.
Importance of Compaction in Paving
When there is proper compaction, we ensure safety, performance, and a longer lifespan of the road. But, without proper compaction, the pavement loses quality, becoming susceptible to infiltrations and wear.
Types of compression
The static and dynamic compaction methods are the most commonly used. In static compaction, the weight of the rollers is used to increase the pavement density. In dynamics, vibratory rollers are used to assist in the settling of the material. The choice of method should depend on the type of soil, project specifications, and pavement characteristics.

After the compaction process, tests and measurements are conducted to verify if the density and degree of compaction have reached the levels required by technical standards, such as the NORMA DNIT 031/2024 – ES, which we will see next.
