Get to know the different types of pavements

The paving of a road is carried out according to the needs identified on site, whether for urban or rural areas. Each pavement requires specific solutions, and therefore there are various solutions for execution and maintenance.

To develop the best pavement, studies are conducted to determine the properties of that area. Drainage systems, geotechnical properties (physical and mechanical characteristics of soils and rocks, which can determine their stability), resistance, and other characteristics are analyzed.

Next, we will present the types of pavements that exist:

Rigid pavement

Rigid pavement, being constructed from concrete, does not suffer much deformation and requires low maintenance, offering greater durability and safety. It has high resistance and is ideal for areas with heavy traffic.

However, when applied in bus corridors, it is used together with semi-rigid pavement due to the alternating sections and streets. But, the cost of this implementation is higher, and in case of any problem such as deformation or cracks in the pavement, the concrete slab needs to be replaced entirely.

Semi-rigid pavement

It is a pavement considered intermediate, its level of deformation is lower compared to rigid pavement, but higher compared to flexible pavement. Moreover, when compared to rigid pavement, it is easier to maintain, making it a good alternative for projects that require less costly budgets.

Generally, this type of paving is used in areas where heavy vehicles travel, and its pavement consists of a cemented base and flexible covering.

A detail that makes all the difference for this pavement is that it can be recycled, potentially becoming a more ecological alternative.

Flexible pavement

Flexible pavement is made from granular bases and asphaltic surfacing. Its positive point is the ease of maintenance, allowing only the damaged section to be repaired without needing to redo the entire road, as we saw with rigid pavement.
